Why My Voice Matters

Writer's picture: TheaThea

There are so many people who do what this blog is doing. There are countless other people making analyses of media and its characters and themes. Many of them also like to focus on the positive aspects that stuck out to them. People have already analyzed movies, shows, cartoons, video games, and a lot more. So, why does my voice matter in all this? What am I doing that adds anything of value to the big world of media analysis?

Every person has their own uniquely individual experience. My experience growing up in a small town as a queer person is different than someone growing up in a secular household in a big city where opportunity is abundant and ready for you. There are also countless different experiences even between people who grew up in the same small town. There is value in every kind of perspective.

One piece of media is hardly ever interpreted in the same way by everyone because everyone has a different frame of reference to see it through. That’s one of the things I love so much about art. People may make a movie with the intention of conveying a certain message, but someone else may watch that movie and take away something completely different. That doesn’t make their interpretation invalid just because it wasn’t intended, it shows how flexible our creations are, and how different our experiences are. But it also highlights how much we need our stories to be told. Fiction often makes us feel more connected to others and their experiences, as well as our own stories. Fiction helps us process the world around us.

So, although there is a lot of media analysis out there, there’s also a lot of art out there. The possibilities in this kind of realm are endless. Creation is one of those things we as humans seem to really enjoy and, to some extent, need. Maybe something I create will find someone who really connects with it. I hope to make something that impacts someone in the same way that art and media has impacted me.
